North Korean launch fails

North Korea has launched what it called a satellite-carrying rocket but the projectile disintegrated soon after the launch.

Japan's Defense Ministry says debris fell into the Yellow Sea, without affecting Japanese territory.

The ministry says a US early warning satellite system confirmed the launch at about 7:40 AM, Japan Time.
The projectile was launched from the western coast of North Korea toward the south and flew for more than one minute.

A Defense Ministry official says the projectile reached an altitude of about 120 kilometers before it disintegrated into around 10 pieces.

They are thought to have fallen into the Yellow Sea west of the Korean Peninsula. The official says none of the pieces reached Japanese territory.

The National Police Agency and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency say there are no reports of damage.

The Defense Ministry is closely analyzing the trajectory using data provided by the US military and obtained by Aegis destroyers from Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force. Two Aegis destroyers have been positioned in the East China Sea around Okinawa, and another in the Sea of Japan.
