Pakistani troops are looking for survivors who were engulfed in an avalanche on a mountain near the Indian border.

The massive avalanche hit a battalion headquarters in the Pakistani-controlled district of disputed Kashmir around 6 AM on Saturday morning.

135 people -- 124 soldiers and 11 civilians -- went missing, presumably buried, in the avalanche.

Rescue workers are continuing the search, but are facing difficulties. No survivors have been found, but some bodies were located.

The avalanche occurred near the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram mountain range. The snow left by the avalanche was reportedly up to 25 meters deep over an area one kilometer wide.

The Pakistani army says Saturday's avalanche is a rare massive one in the past 20 years.

Pakistan deploys thousands of troops in the area up to the altitude of 6,000 meters. The district is known as one of the world's most tense frontiers and the highest battlefield, where Pakistan and India have confronted each other for decades.
