Taiwan to show ancient Chinese artifacts in Tokyo

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has proposed an exhibition in Tokyo of Chinese cultural artifacts held by Taiwan.

Ma made the remark on Monday during a meeting in Taiwan with a bipartisan group of Japanese lawmakers led by Takeo Hiranuma.

The National Palace Museum in Taipei contains about 690,000 cultural artifacts from China's long history. The items were brought to Taiwan by members of the Nationalist Party when they fled mainland China after the civil war with the Communists.

Ma suggested that the exhibition be held at the National Museum in Tokyo between June and September of 2014. He said he wished to promote cultural exchanges with Japan.

If realized, it would be the first such exhibition in Asia. Similar events have been held in the United States and France.

Taiwan has been asking countries to take measures to prohibit China from demanding that such artifacts be returned to the mainland while they are on display in locations overseas.

The Japanese Diet passed a bill last March to prohibit such seizures, paving the way for an exhibition.
