Hong Kong election to be held Sunday

Hong Kong's election committee will decide the territory's next leader on Sunday, with 2 pro-Beijing candidates competing in the leadership race.

With the current chief executive Donald Tsang finishing his 5-year term, 3 candidates are running in the election for his successor.

They are former financial secretary Henry Tang, former cabinet member Leung Chung-ying and Albert Ho Chun-yan from the pro-democracy camp.

Both Tang and Leung are regarded as pro-Beijing.
Tang was seen as the favorite with support from Hong Kong's business community.

However, after Tang made a series of unpopular comments the Chinese government decided to support Leung, who ranked higher in public opinion polls, during the final weeks of the race.

On Saturday, about 200 pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong staged a rally on the front of the Chinese government office to protest.

Deputies of a 1200-member election committee will vote in the election, and a candidate who wins a majority of 601 votes will become Hong Kong's next leader.
