Xinhua: Chongqing leader Bo Xilai removed

The top official of Chinese megacity Chongqing has been removed from his post. There is a growing view that Bo Xilai was effectively dismissed over a scandal involving his former aide.
China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday that the Communist Party's Central Committee had decided to remove Bo Xilai from his post as Chongqing Municipal Committee Secretary. Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang will replace him.
The dismissal came one day after Premier Wen Jiabao criticized Bo without mentioning his name over a scandal involving Chongqing Vice Mayor Wang Lijun, a former close aide to Bo.
The Premier told a news conference on Wednesday that the present Chongqing Party committee and government must reflect sincerely and learn from the Wang Lijun incident.
Wang was dismissed as head of the city's Public Security Bureau on February 2nd and later visited the US Consulate General in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, reportedly staying there overnight. The visit triggered speculation that he may have sought asylum but been denied at the US mission. Wang has since been questioned on corruption charges.
The incident was viewed as an embarrassment to Bo and appeared to have clouded his leadership prospects. Before the scandal, Bo was widely expected to join China's Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee at its convention later this year. Vice President Xi Jinping is expected to be chosen Party General Secretary at the convention.
