Wen says political reform essential
China's Premier Wen Jiabao says the country needs political reform to solve income disparity and corruption.
Wen was speaking at a 3-hour news conference on Wednesday after an annual session of the National People's Congress, China's parliament.
Recalling that his 9 years as premier were difficult, Wen said he feels much work remains to be done.
He vowed to do all he can during his term to deal with the European debt crisis and other issues.
Wen also stressed the need to restructure the state leadership, apparently as part of political reforms needed to allay public discontent.
Wen said he's aware of the difficulty of carrying out such reforms, which he said need public support.
He said China, with a population of 1.3 billion, must gradually establish a socialist democracy based on Chinese characteristics. But he stopped short of mentioning a concrete time frame for such reform.
Wen said he will do his utmost to realize reforms while many of the country's leaders appear cautious about promoting political change, suggesting difficulty in steering the country down a path of reform.
