M 8.6 quake hits off Sumatra

A magnitude-8.6 earthquake has struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The US Geological Survey says the quake was felt at 8:38 UTC, 435 kilometers southwest of the island's Aceh region. The quake's focus was estimated at 23 kilometers deep.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has issued a tsunami watch for nearly 30 countries facing the Indian Ocean, including Indonesia, India, Australia, Kenya and Madagascar.

The center says a tsunami about one meter high was observed in northern Sumatra at around 10 UTC.
