Cherry blossoms in Washington mark centennial
Thousands of cherry trees along the Potomac River in Washington are already in full bloom this year, which marks the centennial of the gift of the saplings from Japan.

Crowds visited the Potomac Park area on Sunday to appreciate the pale pink flowers blossoming on about 3,700 trees. They came into bloom two weeks earlier than usual due to a spell of warm weather.

The annual cherry blossom festival is to begin on Tuesday for a 5-week period, much longer than usual, to celebrate the 100th anniversary. The city of Tokyo gave the original saplings to the US capital in 1912.

The festival will feature parades, exhibitions and concerts on the theme of Japan.

A man who visited with his family said the cherry blossoms in full bloom are extremely beautiful. A woman said she comes to see the blossoms every year and is impressed with the US friendship with Japan.
