Fighting continues in Syria despite UN-led truce


Syrian troops continue  shelling residential areas in major cities a week after a UN-led truce went into force, raising doubts about the effectiveness of a UN monitoring mission in the country.

Local human rights activists say indiscriminate mortar and tank shelling by President Bashar al-Assad's forces has battered Homs in central Syria and Idlib in the north.

In Deir al-Zor in the east, the dissident Free Syrian Army has begun to fight back, leading to violent clashes.

A UN-mediated ceasefire was supposed to take effect on April 12th. An advance party of UN monitors has been in Syria for days.

A Syrian human rights group says more than 200 citizens have been killed in the last week, throwing the effectiveness of the UN mission into question. President Assad continues to indicate that he will cooperate with the UN team.
